Eager to support creativity and imagination in young children but don't know where to begin?

My unique approach to using expressive art materials with young children has been tried and tested in hundreds of classrooms and homes through the US and abroad. After 25 years of presenting workshops and seminars to teachers and parents on how to use creative materials with young children, I am finally offering these workshops online. I am excited to bring my years of expertise into your homes and classrooms.

Through this video course, you will learn:
  • to rediscover and embrace your creativity
  • to become confident using watercolor techniques and tools
  • the differences between a filbert, round, flat and fan brush
  • an understanding of the different kinds of watercolor paints and how to use liquid watercolors
  • what materials can be combined in many different ways
  • the kinds of recycled materials that can be used in collage
  • the difference between gluing something down and creating a collage
  • how to introduce watercolors and collage to a group or individual
  • to create joyful and magical watercolor painting and mixed media collage experiences for young children
  • the difference between a teacher predesigned model of an art project versus a creative materials exploration
  • how to design experiences that invite children to create beautiful and dynamic artworks
  • how the creative experience supports the emerging story and narratives
  • the importance of process, not product
  • that open ended creative material encounters support a longer attention span and help develop focus and self-control in young children
  • and so much more!

Patricia Hunter McGrath is the Executive Director/Atelierista of Branches Atelier in Culver City, California. Founded in 2007, the preschool is an innovative early childhood program inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. Branches currently serves 170 families in its preschool, parent-infant, and parent- toddler programs.

After working as a teacher for seven years at the Growing Place in Santa Monica, Patricia became the Atelierista at Evergreen Community School where over the following years, she developed a unique approach to children's symbolic languages. Using many mediums such as clay, wire, and paint, the children enter into a relationship with the materials in order to express, clarify and modify their ideas and theories.

In 2005, Patricia left Santa Monica for Perth, Australia, to develop the Atelierista role at Bold Park Community School. While there for two years, she also taught the Reggio Emilia Class at Murdoch University as she had previously taught at Santa Monica College.

Deeply inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to education, Patricia is a founding member of the West Coast Collaborative. This coalition of preschools work closely together to share resources, training, professional development, and research on how to apply Reggio inspired practices into early childhood settings. Through this work, the West Coast Collaborative continues to be "in dialogue" with the schools of Reggio Emilia through an ongoing collaboration with pedagogista, Tiziana Filippini.

With more than thirty years of experience in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s degree in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, California, Patricia is still a passionate artist at heart. She is a contributing author of the books In the Spirit of the Atelier and Insights and Inspiration from Reggio Emilia, both published by Davis Press. She presents workshops and seminars on a wide range of topics. She speaks at conferences and consults throughout the United States and abroad, including China, Australia, Canada, and Scotland. She has visited Reggio Emilia, Italy, eight times.

"Thank you so much! I plan to create a collage with my son. I am inspired to create and will take your art training back to my preschool class." ~Anita~

"Thank you Patricia for a very detailed course. You gave so many options, both new and renewed, that will be inviting and beautiful for children to use. Thank you for encouraging us to play with the materials ourselves, it is key to making meaningful conversations with our students." ~Isabela~

"Thank you Patricia! I am very inspired and looking forward working on a collage myself. As a preschool teacher I am already collecting many materials and in my zoom calls we worked on "setting/background" collages for stories. I used a paper bag that I cut open for a big long canvas. After your workshop I understand much better what a collage is and my work with the children was really more a setting. We made our own paint (flour, water and food coloring) and painted with tape resist on paper bags. We took pictures of interesting things on our walks and printed them out and glued them on. We used tissue paper to add three dimensional flowers/colored dots. In the end my "collage/setting" turned into Monet's garden, with a paper bag handle bridge, where all my students (as silhouettes) will come together one more time in celebration of our school year. I teach 2-3 year olds and I will definitely experiment with your techniques and ideas over the Summer. Thank you again for your inspiration and encouragement to be creative ourselves." ~Simone~

"Thank you so much for such a wonderful exploration of collage. So much creativity and learning with these simple materials. I love that the children can revisit this activity for many days. I cant wait to explore this with my class!" ~Lisa~

“Thanks for sharing not only your knowledge but also your love for early childhood! I certainly got inspired and am ready to create with my group of learners!” ~Soledad~
